Who knows how the November 3rd election turns out. Don’t pay the polls much mind. They’ve been wrong too many times. Don’t for a minute consider the White House is going to treat polling stations or the results with the necessary weight and respect.
Try to do this: Understand that the United States is a very big, exceptionally complex, and quite sturdy nation. Americans have shown ourselves capable of making the right decisions at the right time. We operate at so many levels, in so many dimensions.
My optimistic view is that we pursue a much different path on November 3, cast aside the cruelty and incompetence, and elect a new generation of progressive leaders that make a difference in the lives of all Americans. That may be, of course, a perilous optimistic instinct.
But it’s mine. It’s why I joined several hundred people in Benzonia on Saturday at the No Kings protest. It’s why I stood in a long, long line in Traverse City the week before to rally for Abdul el-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Michigan senator. It’s why I believe sanity will overcome the insanity of this political era in the United States. Less than three weeks to go.
